ASSISI

Assisi is nestled on the slopes of Mt. Subasio overlooking the plain where the Topino and Chiascio rivers flow, tributaries of the Tiber.

The city, which is the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare, is known throughout the world as a universal centre for the Franciscan message of peace and brotherhood.

Constructed with the typical “pink stone” of Mt. Subasio, Assisi reflects and exudes an atmosphere of profound spirituality that every visitor will experience in this place that is truly unique for its history and the faith of its saints.

Assisi, with its historic centre, Basilica of St. Francis and other Franciscan sites, along with almost the entire municipal territory, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000.

Among the many monuments that make Assisi one of Italy’s tourist destinations most widely renowned for its art are the Basilica of St. Francis, a worldwide religious cornerstone, the Basilica of St. Clare and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Rufino.

To enjoy the area’s natural wonders be sure to visit the Mt. Subasio Regional Park, established to protect an area of immense environmental worth, imbued with a mystical atmosphere.
