Captivating visitors with postcard-perfect views
Perched on a sunny hill offering marvellous views overlooking the entire Upper Tiber Valley, visitors will be enchanted with just one glance.
Citerna’s characteristic historic centre has remained unchanged, bearing the indelible fingerprints of its passage through time. By following along the Via Garibaldi, the town’s main street, images and emotions from times gone by amaze visitors.
Be sure to visit the church of San Francesco with its interesting paintings attributed to Luca Signorelli and Raffaellino del Colle; the church of San Michele Arcangelo housing a Madonna Della Robbia; and the fortress where the town’s noble rulers once resided. Walk along the medieval communication trench that runs along a good part of the walled perimeter of Citerna, forming a series of arcades that make for a truly enchanting sight. Another interesting site worth visiting is the fireplace in the Prosperi-Vitelli mansion, “the fireplace of lovers” where it is said that couples would go to meet. The characteristic fireplace in sandstone features artistic bas-reliefs. It consists of a large doorway with two niches to the side separated by a fireplace in the centre: a characteristic that allowed the betrothed to speak without touching one another. According to popular belief, a declaration of love made in front of this fireplace would unite lovers for eternity.
