Foligno Tourist Information

In the charming natural landscape that surrounds Foligno  there are cities, castles, villages, fortresses, churches, monasteries and noble palaces that testify to the millenary succession of civilisations in this territory.

The area’s most important towns include: Montefalco, known as the Balcony of Umbria and famous the world over for its excellent Sagrantino wine; Bevagna, which began as a splendid Roman commune and later became an important medieval centre; Trevi, which gently climbs up a hillside with silvery-green olive trees; Spello, attached to the far end of Mt. Subasio, which was once a flourishing and important Roman colony; Nocera Umbra, known for its thermal baths and spring water; Gualdo Cattaneo, with its fortress and castles.

And then we have Foligno. An important commercial centre and major crossroads, Foligno is also a city of historical and artistic interest. Today, the old city wall still surrounds the noble medieval palaces and churches, such as Palazzo Trinci, home of the Art Gallery, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Municipal Institution and the multimedia Museum of Tournaments and Games. The Cathedral, dedicated to San Feliciano, the patron saint of Foligno, looks out onto Piazza Grande square, and the Municipal Hall dating back to the thirteenth century with its crenellated tower watches over the city streets.

The territory’s flourishing crafts industry ranges from the production of baskets and ropes in Bevagna to the centuries-old production of files and rasps in Sellano, the only one of its kind in Italy. There are also the fabrics of Montefalco and the restoration of musical instruments and the construction of organs in Foligno.

The roots of the area’s foods and wines can be traced back to the local peasant tradition and is characterised by dishes with authentic flavours prepared with the finest extra virgin olive oil from the hills of the territory, served with tasty and full-bodied Sagrantino wines.
