GUBBIO

The city of Candles

Gubbio sits on the slopes of Mt. Ingino overlooking a fertile plain. The city of the Candles (chosen as the symbol of the Region of Umbria) is one of Umbria’s most important art destinations.

Thanks to its centuries-long ceramic tradition, it is a member of the Italian Association of Ceramic Towns ("Artistic and Traditional Ceramics" national seal).

Gubbio is one of Umbria’s oldest cities, and it has remained incredibly well-preserved over the centuries, with many monuments that bear witness to its glorious past. In architectural terms, it represents the zenith of medieval civilization and society in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with the town’s system of guilds.

The area’s natural attractions, in addition to the environmental oasis of Mt. Cucco Park, include the fascinating Bottaccione Gorge with rocks that, according to one theory, reveal the secrets of the disappearance of the dinosaur 65 million years ago.
