The Mount Cucco Regional Park, where the mountain sports of paragliding, caving, cross-country skiing and trekking are practised, extends over the territory of the towns of Scheggia, Costacciaro, Sigillo and Fossato di Vico. It is the kingdom of the wolf, of the golden eagle and of the falcon.
Gubbio, prime example of a medieval town, is the heart of the territory and beats passionately on the occasion of the famous Corsa dei Ceri (Candle race) that takes place every year on May 15th. The city conserves intact its medieval charm that embraces you as you walk through the little alleyways and squares and visit the churches and buildings. The Church of Saint Francis (13th century) houses a valuable cycle of frescoes. Proceeding along Via dei Consoli, you come to the Fountain of the Bargello.
Continuing straight on you come to Piazza Grande, one of the most suggestive medieval constructions with a panoramic terrace looking out over the basin of Gubbio. Here are to be found some of the most beautiful buildings in Gubbio, starting with the Palazzo dei Consoli inside which are to be found the Tablets of Gubbio (seven bronze tablets, witness to the civilisation and the language of the ancient Umbrian tribe) and the Art Gallery, housing works of Palmerucci, Signorelli, Nelli, Barocci and others.
In the upper part of the town are located the gothic Cathedral (12th century) and the Ducal Palace (15th century), residence of Federico da Montefeltro, with its elegant courtyard. Finally, the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo (16th century), built on top of Mount Ingino.
Another important centre is Gualdo Tadino, which boasts important works of art, among which stand out those of Matteo da Gualdo, one of the most eclectic painters of the 15th century, and the art of ceramics, which causes Gualdo to be one of the most important production centres of the region.
The active and flourishing crafts industry is linked to the history and the traditions of the territory, with top quality examples of wrought iron, wood, leather and ceramics coming from the workshops of Gubbio and Gualdo Tadino.
The cuisine conserves the habits and traditions linked to the seasons and the local crops.
