CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO

One of Italy’s most beautiful villages

Fortified on a small promontory, surrounded by a city wall dating back to the thirteenth century, Castiglione del Lago, with its powerful, triangular tower virtually 30 metres high, rises up on the western side of Lake Trasimeno.

It was one of the first sites to be named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

One of Castiglione del Lago’s greatest artistic sites is the Palazzo Della Corgna, built around 1560 on the first tower-house of the Baglioni family. This thirteenth-century building, which was expanded over the years, is decorated with frescoes considered to be some of the best examples of the mannerist painting style in the region. The town is also home to one of the most outstanding military structures of medieval Umbria, the Rocca del Leone fortress. With its irregular pentagon shape, five towers and three doors, the fortress was built on a calcareous cliff overlooking Lake Trasimeno in 1247.

One of the area’s most important events, known as “Coloriamo i cieli” (Let’s Colour the Sky), held on May 1st, is an international gathering for kite flyers of all ages.

With its natural, historic, artistic and cultural treasures, Castiglione del Lago is a popular destination for both foreign and Italian tourists year after year. The lakeside shores, with their pine forests, meadows, sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, allow you to take part in numerous water sports, making it the perfect place for enjoying an active holiday.
