CORCIANO

Medieval village waiting to be discovered

Corciano has maintained the appearance of a medieval village, protected behind a stretch of city walls from where you can enjoy far-reaching views. Its Etruscan-Roman roots are attested to by the discovery of an Etruscan necropolis and numerous archaeological finds housed at the Municipal Hall (16th century). Located nearby is the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo (15th century) adjacent to the Palazzo dei Priori e della Mercanzia. In the same area is the church of Santa Maria Assunta (13th century), which houses the Assunta by Il Perugino (1513) and the Gonfalone by Benedetto Bonfigli (1472), and the church of San Cristoforo (1537) with a collection of religious art. Another interesting site is the church of San Francesco, with its Gothic architectural style and frescoes from the Umbrian-Sienese School of the fourteenth and fifteenth century. Not far from the historic centre visitors can admire the ancient castle of Pieve del Vescovo.

One of the town’s most important cultural events is Agosto Corcianese, or Corciano in August.
