Between the past and present
Spoleto is one of the region’s most fascinating art cities. Its rich history, dynamic cultural heritage and important artistic events make it a widely appreciated tourist destination.
The historic centre, bearing evident traces of its Roman heritage, has maintained its medieval appearance intact.
The city’s greatest monuments are without a doubt the cathedral, with splendid frescos by Filippo Lippi; the mighty Ponte delle Torri, a bridge 80 meters high and 230 meters long supported by ten pointed arches; and the ancient Roman aqueduct reconstructed in the 1300’s that links the Albornoz Fortress to the slopes of the mountain overlooking the town.
The "sacred wood" of Monteluco, located in the surrounding area is definitely worth a visit. This thick forest of evergreen holm-oaks is a beautiful nature preserve and spiritual oasis.
The famous Spoleto Festival, a premiere cultural event, is held here annually.
