Spoleto is a very old urban centre, inhabited since prehistorical times and inserted in a natural environment of indisputable beauty.
The city has preserved intact the charm of a medieval village, made of splendid architectural structures, well visible along the walls surrounding the historical centre. Walking through its characteristic old streets or along the old walls, in a crescendo of palaces, churches, fortifications, theatres and amphitheatres, the eyes of the visitor are drawn to a historical, artistic and cultural patrimony of enormous importance which makes Spoleto one of the most interesting places in Umbria.
You enter the town through the splendid Garibaldi Gate and then continue towards the Roman Amphitheatre (1st century AD). The Church of San Gregorio Maggiore, the Church of the Misericordia, the Church of San Domenico, Palazzo Spada, seat of the Municipal Art Gallery, the Town Hall and Palazzo Collicola, seat of the Gallery of Modern Art, all merit a visit.
In this splendid artistic context are the town’s three most famous and fascinating monuments: the Cathedral, which has become famous thanks to the concerts of the Festival of the Two Worlds; the Rocca Albornoziana (Albornaz Fortress), which dominates Spoleto and is nowadays used for cultural events; and finally, the nearby Ponte delle Torri (Bridge of the Towers).
