Spoleto Tourist Information

Spoleto is an ancient city, inhabited since prehistoric times and nestled into a natural environment with an unmistakably beautiful landscape.

The city has preserved the charm of a medieval village in a juxtaposition of splendid architectural structures that can be seen along the walls surrounding the historic centre. Walking along its characteristic and ancient streets or along its ancient walls, in a crescendo of palaces, churches, fortifications, theatres and amphitheatres, visitors will be amazed at the sight of the historic, artistic and cultural heritage of enormous importance that makes Spoleto one of the most interesting cities in Umbria.

You can access the city from the splendid Garibaldi Gate, then continue towards the Roman Amphitheatre (1st century BC). Be sure to visit the church of San Gregorio Maggiore, the church of the Misericordia, the church of San Domenico, Palazzo Spada, home of the Municipal Art Gallery, the Town Hall and Palazzo Collicola where the Gallery of Modern Art is housed.

Within this splendid artistic context are the town’s three most famous and fascinating monuments: the cathedral, made famous by the concerts of the Spoleto Festival held there; the Albornoz Fortress, which looms over Spoleto and is currently used as a venue for cultural events; and finally, the adjacent Ponte delle Torri, or Bridge of the Towers.

The Spoleto area is filled with villages, castles and springs that enrich its cultural heritage and other towns and sights worth visiting are Castel Ritaldi, Monteluco, Giano dell’Umbria and the Clitunno Springs.

As you explore the area be sure to taste the simple cuisine rooted in old-world traditions that is inspired by the wonderful products that this part of Umbria has to offer.
