The territory of Terni is a large plain surrounded by mountains and hills with small towns and villages: an ideal frame for the Natural Park of the Val di Serra and the nearby Valnerina.
The territory is characterised by the presence of water such as the Lake of Piediluco and the Marmore waterfalls, the highest in Europe. The main towns of Terni, Narni, Amelia and Orvieto and other smaller localities have developed in a fascinating historical context , conserving ruins of Roman towns, medieval architecture, walls, fortifications and Renaissance buildings.
Terni is a town dating back to prehistorical times but, thanks to some distinguishing characteristics, it is one of the most important sites of industrial archaeology in Europe. Called the “City of Love”, it is the home of Saint Valentine, patron saint of lovers. Places to visit include the Basilica of Saint Valentine, the Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco and the Church of San Salvatore.
Narni is dominated by the Rocca Alborniziana (Albornoz Fortress) and, in its small, perfectly conserved historical centre you can admire architectural masterpieces such as the Piazza dei Priori, the Cathedral and the Church of Santa Maria in Pensole; under the streets of the town you can enter the mysterious and fascinating atmosphere of Narni underground, with cells dating back to the times of the Inquisition, churches, rooms and historical remains.
In Amelia, surrounded by the old Polygonal Walls still with their original gates - Romana, Ciclopica, Leone and Della Valle - you can visit the Cathedral, the Church of Saint Francis, the Civic Tower and the Church and Monastery of San Magno.
Near San Gemini you will come to Carsulae, an old Roman town in which the houses, amphitheatre and the gate in the walls are still visible.
For food and wine you can try dishes deriving from a good peasant cuisine, with genuine flavours; mushrooms, truffles, D.O.P oil and good wine are the protagonists of the table of Terni.
