Terni Tourist Information

The territory of Terni is a wide plain surrounded by mountains and hills with small towns and villages clinging to their slopes. This scenery acts as an ideal frame for the Val di Serra Natural Park and the nearby Valnerina district.

The territory is characterised by bodies of fresh water such as Lake Piediluco and the Marmore Waterfalls, the highest in Europe today. The area’s major towns of Terni, Narni, Amelia and Orvieto were built in a charming and fascinating historic context and the ruins of Roman cities, medieval architecture, defence walls, fortifications and various Renaissance buildings can be found in other smaller villages.

While Terni’s origins can be traced back to prehistoric times, some of the city’s unique characteristics make it one of the most important industrial archaeology sites found in Europe. Also known as the “City of Love”, it is the home of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. Be sure to visit the Basilica of St. Valentine, the cathedral, the church of San Francesco and the church of San Salvatore.

Narni is dominated by the  Albornoz Fortress, and in its small, perfectly preserved historic centre you can admire architectural masterpieces such as the Piazza dei Priori square, the cathedral and the church of Santa Maria in Pensole. Below the streets of the town lies the mysterious and fascinating atmosphere of Narni underground, with cells dating back to the times of the Inquisition along with churches, rooms and historic finds.

Surrounded by the old Polygonal Walls with their intact, original gates (Romana, Ciclopica, Leone and Della Valle), Amelia offers visitors a lovely cathedral, the church of San Francesco, the Civic Tower and the church and monastery of San Magno.

One site near San Gemini worth a visit is Carsulae, an ancient Roman city whose houses, amphitheatre and defence wall gate are still visible.

The local cuisine features dishes prepared in the finest rural tradition, with genuine flavours: mushrooms, truffles, D.O.P oil and fine wines are the stars of the table in Terni.
