Todi Tourist Information
Todi rises up on a hill with a distinctive urban layout in the shape of a three pointed star. Three circles of defence walls continue to surround the city, whose medieval charm has remained intact.
Today, Todi is well-known throughout the world for its beautiful buildings, bright countryside and the quality of life it offers both its residents and tourists visiting there. There are so many places to see. Piazza del Popolo, the heart of the city, is where the cathedral, Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Palazzo del Popolo are found. The latter building is also home to the Etruscan-Roman Museum and the Art Gallery where visitors can admire ancient finds and precious ceramics and majolica pieces in addition to frescoes from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Slightly further ahead is the church of San Fortunato with the crypt where the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi is buried. Also, be sure to visit the underground reaches of Todi. The city has numerous other cultural sites that lead tourists on a journey through the narrow medieval streets, where they can admire architectural masterpieces on just about every corner.
The church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, one of the most beautiful Renaissance churches in Umbria, rises up at the foot of the hill. Another stop to be made is at the austere Convent of Montesanto, an imposing construction and ancient Franciscan settlement. Located 7 km from Todi, heading towards Massa Martana, is the Santuario dell’Amore Misericordioso, one of the most audacious examples of modern architecture. The sanctuary, with a complex divided into various buildings, is a destination for thousands of devout Christians every year.
Todi once had an impressive 365 castles and countless churches and places of worship, in a land dotted with green hills. Other towns in the area are, therefore, definitely worth a visit, including Marsciano, Collazzone, Massa Martana and Monte Castello di Vibio.
The local crafts made with wrought iron, copper, brass, leather and ceramics include refined examples of great artisan skill.
The local cuisine is characterised by wholesome dishes with unique flavours, the most tasty and renowned of which are wild pigeon or wood pigeon. Wine plays a very important role on the table since excellent D.O.C. wines are produced from the vineyards in the Todi area: full-bodied red wines and fruity, dry and fragrant white wines such as Grechetto.
