Tourist Information about Todi
Todi is built on a hill with an unmistakable three star urban design. The town has preserved intact its medieval charm and is still surrounded by three circles of walls.
Nowadays Todi is well known throughout the world for the beauty of its buildings, the luminescence of its countryside and the quality of life it offers its inhabitants and the tourists staying there. The places to visit are numerous: Piazza del Popolo, in the centre of town, with the Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the “Palazzo del Popolo, which houses the seat of the Etruscan-Roman Museum and the Art Gallery where antique finds and precious ceramics and majolica as well as interesting frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries can be seen. Not far away is the Church of San Fortunato with the crypt in which Jacopone da Todi, Franciscan friar and poet, is buried. Also worth a visit is the underground Todi. There are many other cultural spots to visit in the town wandering through the narrow medieval alleyways with architectural masterpieces on every corner.
At the bottom of the hill is the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, one of the most beautiful Renaissance churches in Umbria. Another place to visit is the austere Convent of Montesanto, a impressive building and old Franciscan settlement. 7 km from Todi, going towards Massa Martana, is the Santuario dell’Amore Misericordioso, one of the most daring examples of modern architecture. The sanctuary complex consists of various buildings and is the destination of thousands of pilgrims every year.
Todi once had 365 castles, countless churches and holy places, in a territory of green hills. So, it is well worth a visit to other localities such as Marsciano, Collazzone, Massa Martana and Monte Castello di Vibio.
The crafts industry includes fine examples of wrought iron, copper, brass, leather and ceramics.
Gastronomy is characterised by strongly flavoured natural dishes such as wood pigeons and doves; wine plays a very important part on the table as this area produces excellent D.O.C. wine: full red wines and fruity, dry and fragrant white wines, such as Grechetto.
