CASCIA

The native city of St. Rita

Known throughout the world as the birthplace of St. Rita, Cascia has the characteristic structure of a hill town dominated from above by the remains of the fortress and by the former Convent of St. Agostino.

The ancient origins of Cascia are attested to by its Roman remains, castle ruins and medieval towers. The Sanctuary of St. Rita is a popular religious tourist attraction while mementos of the saint are preserved in the adjoining monastery.

Even the local festivities are devoted to the saint. On May 21st the celebrations for St. Rita begin with the traditional Luminaria procession. The celebration continues on May 22nd, with the historic parade in medieval costumes and the Blessing of the Roses. Festivities end on the fourth Sunday of June in Roccaporena with the Festival of the Roses and a celebration in honour of women named Rita.
