Valnerina Tourist Information

The Valnerina is a narrow valley, flanked by tight gorges, with alternating hills and rocky cliffs touched by the waters of the Nera, Velino and Tiber rivers. This vast territory is home to the Sibylline Mountain Park, an area of great environmental importance where the Castelluccio Plains stretch out, a paradise for hang gliders and hikers.

In this ancient land of great traditions and wonderful landscapes you can head out on a mystical journey, following the religious itineraries of two important saints – St. Benedict of Norcia and St. Rita of Cascia.

Located on a hill, Cascia is dominated by the Sanctuary and Monastery of St Rita. Be sure to visit the town’s other masterpieces of medieval architecture such as the church of San Francesco, the church of Sant’Antonio Abate and Palazzo Carli. The nearby town of Roccaporena, the birthplace of Saint Rita, is also worthy of a visit since it is rich in sites commemorating her life, including the house she was born in, the Miracle Garden and the Prayer Rock.

Continuing on you will reach the town of Norcia, still protected behind a defence wall. The gates open up onto a dense network of streets and alleyways that will lead you to the true centre of the town and the most important sights: the Basilica of St. Benedict (13th century), with a crypt built on top of the remains of a Roman building, the fortress, and the Town Hall.

In the Valnerina territory, and especially in Norcia, one of the most important crafts is pork butchering. Equally important sectors include the production of dairy products and the working of wrought iron in addition to wood crafts and the reproduction of antique furniture.

The local dishes are simple yet tasty, the most important ingredient being black truffle. Other characteristic ingredients include spelt, lentils, saffron and, thanks to the area’s abundance of rivers, fresh fish. A special place at the table is reserved for Norcia’s locally prepared cured meats, the area’s main claim to fame.
