Here life always takes place outdoors; bars invade the sidewalks and conversations gravitate around the medieval Fontana Maggiore, the hub of the city centre. Our guided tour, to discover this fascinating city, starts from Piazza IV Novembre with a visit to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Priori Palace with the National Gallery of Umbria, the Sala dei Notari and the Collegio del Cambio. The National Gallery houses one of the richest collections of Renaissance art in the world and will host, from 4 March to 11 June 2023, the exhibition of Perugino, “the best master of Italy”, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death (highly recommended). The afternoon continues with the experience of Perugia Underground, to discover the city within the city, the ancient walls and the acropolis of the Etruscan and then Roman era. Our Perugian experience ends with a chocolate tasting at Cafè Turan, a delicious city tradition not to be missed, and with a walk at sunset along the unmissable Via dell’Acquedotto. Fourth Day, 9 April 2023: the rural charme of Lake Trasimeno
The awakening of a new day leads us today to discover Lake Trasimeno, dotted with beautifully preserved medieval towns and a very popular destination for birdwatchers and fishing enthusiasts. It owes its name to an ancient legend which tells of Prince Trasimeno and his love for the nymph Agilla. Over the centuries the lake has bewitched countless poets, painters and travellers. Since 1995, the Regional Park has been characterized by a wetland where, among luxuriant reeds, wild ducks, cormorants, kites and kingfishers throng. On these shores life flows slowly and for those who love relaxation and tranquillity, this is the ideal place. Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno offer splendid views and it is wonderful to sip a drink, admiring the wonderful colors of the sky that are reflected on the lake at any time of the day and especially at sunset. Possibility to move by ferry to the Maggiore and Polvese Islands. To learn more about the history of the fish and birdlife of Trasimeno and to learn about the secrets of the fishermen and the tools they use, we suggest you visit the Fishing Museum of San Feliciano in the municipality of Magione; if you want to know the boats used by fishermen since the Middle Ages, we suggest you visit the Boat Museum, housed in the fortress of Passignano. Also worth a visit are the hilltop villages such as Panicale, full of small shops where you can go shopping for a sweet tooth, such as the Trasimeno bean. From the glimpses overlooking the valley, you will be able to observe the rows of perfectly spaced olive trees, in a unique setting. If your passion is good food, the lake will thrill you, thanks to the Slow food products such as saffron from Città della Pieve and the Gamay vine, which gave rise to the Colli del Trasimeno Wine Road, which welcomes visitors with itineraries for discover the wine and the territory. End of the trip.
Third Day, 10 April 2023: Bevagna e Montefalco, among ancient crafts, cellar and tradition
After a hearty breakfast, we leave for Bevagna. Located in the heart of Umbria, Bevagna is located in the Foligno plain, at the foot of the hilly group where Montefalco stands, near the bend of the river Timia. For the remarkable environmental, cultural and artistic heritage it is part of the club of “The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy”. Squares and alleys, churches and palaces, gates, walls and bell towers… The signs of time engraved on the stones tell of the ancient Mevania, “the one who is in the middle”. Flourishing commercial center in Roman times, crossed by the ancient Via Flaminia and home to an important river port, at the confluence of Clitunno and Timia. A real open-air museum, famous for the genuineness of its products and for its cultural events, Bevagna is known beyond national borders for being the city of Gaite, one of the most beautiful historical re-enactments in Italy. The former church of the Madonna della Neve is worth a visit, a thermal building, which preserves a floor mosaic from the 2nd century AD. and, in the upper part of the city, the houses arranged in a semicircle follow the shape of the ancient theatre, the splendid Piazza Silvestri, with the Romanesque churches of San Silvestro and San Michele Arcangelo, both from the end of the 12th century, the palazzo del Consoli (1270), which houses a nineteenth-century jewel such as the Francesco Torti Theater, and the church of Santi Domenico e Giacomo (14th century) represent its beating heart. From this place the territories of the four districts branch off, which in Bevagna are called Gaite: San Giorgio and San Giovanni, Santa Maria and San Pietro. Important evidence of eighteenth-century private building is Palazzo Lepri, in Corso Matteotti, now the Town Hall, which houses the Library, the Historical Archive and the Civic Museum, consisting of an archaeological section and the art gallery. For lunch we explore the wonderful Sagrantino road and reach a historic cellar. Visit and lunch with tasting of wines made from native vines. Our excursion ends with an afternoon walk in Montefalco, the “railing of Umbria” for a nice walk, with a wonderful view of the beautiful hills completely covered with vineyards and olive groves and an aperitif in one of the characteristic wine bars in the wonderful Piazza del Comune , where it is recommended to dine, thanks to the presence of excellent restaurants.
