1st day – ASSISI – SANCTUARY OF VERNA – PIEVE SANTO STEFANO (about 15 km – AVERAGE 5 HOURS)

Arrival in Assisi independently in the morning.

Our suggestion is to leave the car and find it again on the last day.

Transfer with one of our drivers towards the Sanctuary of La Verna. From here you start the walk in the direction of Pieve Santo Stefano.

2nd day – CITERNA – CITTA DI CASTELLO (about 20 km – MEDIUM – 7 HOURS)

In the morning after breakfast, transfer with one of our drivers from the Pieve Santo Stefano structure to the starting point of Citerna.

From here the path leads us to Città di Castello.

In the morning after breakfast, transfer with one of our drivers from the Città di Castello structure to the starting point in Pietralunga.

Morning dedicated to the discovery of Assisi 

Every evening of the itinerary, overnight accommodation is provided in facilities such as the Pilgrim’s Refectory of the Santuario de La Verna, 3/2 star hotels, farmhouses and guest houses, along the route of Via di Francesco who have availability therefore guaranteeing overnight stay and dinner in the structure every night.

As regards the two trips that we normally feel like suggesting by car between Pieve Santo Stefano – Citerna and between Città di Castello – Pietralunga, they are included because the route, according to the many who have traveled the route is demanding and above all because it would force them to add two further overnight stays.

1st DAY

Arrival in the afternoon in Assisi and walk to discover the city and traces of the life of Saint Clare, who as a teenager left her father’s house to follow Saint Francis and his life.

After breakfast we move to Foligno, Santa Angela, one of the first Italian mystics, was born in the medieval Umbrian town in 1248.

After breakfast we go to Collevalenza, in the near Todi, where the Sanctuary of Merciful Love founded by Mother Speranza is located, where the purifying pools are located.

Arrival in the early afternoon in Roccaporena of Cascia, the birthplace of Santa Rita. You will have the opportunity to visit some of the significant places of the Saint. For the more daring we suggest climbing the Scoglio della Preghiera.

2ND DAY

After breakfast, free walk around Cascia and visit the Basilica of Santa Rita, visit to the ancient Monastery with the most significant places in the life of Santa Rita.

Arrival in the morning at Massa Martana, an ancient village of Roman origin, born as a rest station on the Via Flaminia. The castrum was located in the early Middle Ages on a cliff at the foot of the Martani Mountains, and still retains the castle walls and interesting civil and religious buildings, including the Abbey of San Faustino.

2ND DAY

After breakfast, we suggest a visit to Perugia to start from St. Peter’s Basilica, in the Borgo XX Giugno district. It was founded in the 10th century and was the first Episcopal seat in Perugia. There are two main curiosities of this Abbey, one is a painting, it represents the Triumph of the Benedictine Order, and depicts Saints, Popes, Cardinals, Bishops, Abbots and founders of related Orders such as Camaldolese, Silvestrini etc. that surround San Benedetto da Norcia. It has the prerogative of being the largest canvas in the world, occupying the entire upper part of the internal entrance wall of the church. The best place to observe it is towards the main altar. If we focus our attention on St. Benedict and the two patches of sky within which we see the sun and the moon, a disturbing, demonic figure appears in their place. The other curiosity is the Medieval Botanical Garden, in the ancient fish market of the Monastery.

The walk continues towards the historic center of Perugia.

In the afternoon we move to Assisi to start from Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Basilica of the same name which houses the Porziuncola and then go up towards the Abbey of San Pietro in Assisi. To end in what, although not a Benedictine abbey, is certainly one of the places in the world symbolizing religion, the Basilica of San Francesco.

After breakfast we suggest visiting the Abbey of Sassovivo,near Foligno. Set in the greenery, on the slopes of Mount Serrone, the Abbey rises (520 m) among forests of holm oaks, Aleppo pines, junipers and downy oaks.
