ASSISI – SANCTUARY OF VERNA – SANSEPOLCRO (about 35 km)

Arriving in Assisi in the morning, leave the car and move by private van to the Sanctuary of La Verna, from where the first stage by bicycle begins. You can visit the suggestive sanctuary, nestled in the woods, before setting off on your bike. You will cross Pieve Santo Stefano, before skirting the lake of Montedoglio and then arriving in Sansepolcro. Dinner and overnight stay in a structure in San Sepolcro

2nd day

SANSEPOLCRO-CITY OF CASTELLO (30 KM)

You will leave Sansepolcro behind to cycle through the countryside between Tuscany and Umbria. The only climb of the day is the one, quite steep, which will lead you to the village of Citerna. From here continue towards Città di Castello, making the most of the dirt cycle path that runs along the Tiber river. Dinner and overnight stay in a structure in Città di Castello

3rd day

CITY OF CASTELLO-PIETRALUNGA (30 KM)

One of the most demanding stages of the entire Northern route, with two climbs to overcome. The first is long and regular, immersed in the woods, which alternating dirt and asphalt will lead you to Pieve de’ Saddi. The second is shorter, but steep, just before reaching Pietralunga, a small village surrounded by greenery, ideal for relaxing and resting. Dinner and overnight stay in a structure in Pietralunga

4th day

PIETRALUNGA-GUBBIO (24 KM)

Leaving behind Pietralunga, you will cycle on roads immersed in the green of the Umbrian nature, almost completely free of traffic. 5th day

GUBBIO-VALFABBRICA (33 KM)

The scenery of the reed beds and the ease with which you can spot wildlife in this part of the protected area of Lake Trasimeno, merit numerous stops that allow you to take in the views of the lake.

The madman’s license in Gubbio

To feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland, a bit like the Hatter, we take you to Gubbio, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Umbria, also known by the Roman name of Iguvium, rich in history, monuments, architectural works and … also famous for being known as the City of Fools!
Well as such, in the Gubbio city you can also take the Fool’s License complete with Parchment. Everything starts and revolves around the Bargello Fountain, built around the 16th century, located in front of Palazzo Bargello in the heart of the historic center of Gubbio and renowned for being the Fools’ Fountain!

It all dates back to an ancient practice of 1880 and still in use today for the citizens of Gubbio but also for all the tourists traveling to Gubbio!
Attention! The Madmen’s license also requires requirements and is based on strict regulations:
1. It must be a genuine Eugubino to apply for the Madman’s License on your behalf
2. Pay a contribution to the Maggio Eugubino Association
3. Make 3 laps around the Fontana dei Matti in the presence of a genuine Eugubino Matto!
4. Being “baptized” by the spray of water from the Fontana dei Matti itself.

After passing the test, the same Association will grant you the Parchment of the Fool’s License written in medieval style.
The tradition of the Matti is linked to the laps, the “birate”, which take place around the main flagpole of Piazza Grande during the famous and folkloristic Ceri festival which is held every year on May 15th.

EUGUBINI, ROCKY CRAZY!
According to some geological studies, around the city they would have detected rocky conformations contaminated by a highly toxic chemical substance, iridium, which could in some way explain the “madness” of the Gubbio inhabitants.

Dinamic holiday in Spoleto’s history

Arrival in Spoleto in the early afternoon for a free walk to discover the city with a glorious past. Children will be fascinated by the new mechanized escalator route which from the very convenient Ponzianino car park leads up to the Rocca Albornoziana and the Ponte delle Torri.

SECOND DAY

After breakfast, when the weather is good the day will be totally dedicated to an active outdoor experience. For example, a section of the route of the Vecchia Ferrovia Spoleto – Norcia can be done by bike. The railway was inaugurated in 1926 and, for the time, represented a real engineering masterpiece in just over 50 kilometres, including helical tunnels and the daring bridge over the Cortaccione stream. The railway was closed in 1968 and, after many years of inactivity, in July 2014 the current cycle/pedestrian path was inaugurated on the route of the old railway, which can now be traveled up to Piedipaterno.
